Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd have locked uncompetitive Premier League in ‘hateful marriage’

0

‘Anyone can beat anyone else in the Premier League’ is fine marketing spiel but also provable nonsense when five teams have no wins from six games.   The pattern is clear. Ten teams, from 11th downwards, have played 50 games and won only six. Yet the Premier League’s self-interested promo merchants would have you believe…

Maldives President Muizzu in India on first state visit to repair ties

0

Mohamed Muizzu arrives in India on first state visit since he came to power last year as he aims to improve strained ties.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has embarked on his first visit to India since coming to power last year, as he aims to repair diplomatic ties with Asia’s third-largest economy amid an economic crisis back home.

Muizzu, who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday, will hold meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior Indian officials during his five-day trip.

The two sides will focus on “strengthening bilateral cooperation and further enhancing the longstanding relationship between the two nations,” the president’s office said in a statement on Sunday.

Ties were strained after Muizzu asked India to remove its soldiers from the island nation as he called New Delhi’s influence a threat to the country’s sovereignty. Leading up to the 2023 elections, Muizzu’s Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had promised to expel Indian soldiers deployed in the island nation to help in humanitarian and medical evacuations.

Muizzu travelled to Turkey and China on state visits seen as a snub to New Delhi. This was a break from the past tradition of Maldivian presidents making India their first port of call.

India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar welcomed Muizzu to New Delhi on Sunday. In a statement, he said he was confident the visit and talks with Modi on Monday would give “a new impetus” to the “friendly ties” between the two countries.

Anti-India rhetoric toned down

New Delhi withdrew its troops in March but did not close the diplomatic channel as it is wary of China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean, including in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

The Maldivian president was invited to Modi’s inauguration as prime minister in June while Foreign Minister Jaishankar visited Male in August in the first high-level between meeting the two sides since Muizzu’s election late last year.

India has invested close to $1.5bn in various infrastructure projects in the archipelago nation.

Since coming to power, Muizzu has also toned down his anti-Indian rhetoric and has stated that he would not disrupt the regional balance by replacing Indian forces with Chinese troops.

“President Muizzu remains committed to enhancing bilateral ties with nations that play a crucial role in the development and growth of the Maldives,” his office said while announcing the Delhi visit.

Muzzu’s diplomatic outreach comes as the country’s foreign reserves have dropped to a record low and the island nation’s credit rating has been downgraded by Moody’s.

The archipelago – known for its white sand beaches, with tourism accounting for nearly a third of its economy – is also strategically placed halfway along key east-west international shipping routes.

Male signed a raft of infrastructure, energy, marine and agricultural deals with China when Muizzu visited Beijing in January.

Elon Musk promises to give away $1 million daily until the election. Is that legal?

0

Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor, Josh Shapiro, on Oct. 20 called on law enforcement to investigate billionaire Elon Musk for his promise at a weekend pro-Trump rally to give away $1 million each day until Election Day.

Mr. Musk on Oct. 19 gave a $1 million check to an attendee at the rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which was hosted by America PAC, a political action group the Tesla CEO set up to back Republican Donald Trump in the Nov. 5 presidential election.

Mr. Shapiro said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Mr. Musk’s plan to give money to registered voters in Pennsylvania is “deeply concerning” and “it’s something that law enforcement could take a look at.”

The money is the latest example of Mr. Musk using his extraordinary wealth to influence the tightly contested presidential race between Mr. Trump and his Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris. Pennsylvania is a must-win state for both Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris.

Mr. Musk’s America PAC is playing a major role in helping mobilize and register voters in battleground states that could decide the election, but there are signs it is having trouble meeting its goals, Reuters was first to report on Oct. 18.

The lucky recipient of the first check was a man named John Dreher, event staff said.

“By the way, John had no idea. So anyway, you’re welcome,” Mr. Musk said as he handed Mr. Dreher the check.

On Oct. 20, Mr. Musk handed a second $1 million check to a woman at an event in Pittsburgh, according to a post by America PAC on X.

Mr. Musk is promising to give $1 million each day to someone who signs his online petition, which reads: “The First and Second Amendments guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I am pledging my support for the First and Second Amendments.”

To be eligible for the $1 million, petition signers must be a registered voter and live in one of the seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, according to the America PAC website.

The petition also offers $100 to each registered Pennsylvania voter who signs and $100 for referring a registered Pennsylvania voter to sign.

The legality of the giveaways is sure to come under scrutiny in the coming days.

It is a federal crime to pay people with the intention of inducing or rewarding them to cast a vote or to get registered, an offense punishable by prison time. The prohibition covers not only monetary expenditures, but also anything of monetary value like liquor or lottery chances, a Justice Department election-crimes manual says.

The Harrisburg event was the third in as many days in Pennsylvania, where Mr. Musk is painting November’s election in stark terms and encouraging supporters to vote early and get others to do the same.

Attendees of the event on Oct. 19 had to sign the petition, which allows America PAC to garner contact details for more potential voters that it can work to get to the polls for Mr. Trump.

Mr. Musk, ranked by Forbes as the world’s richest person, so far has supplied at least $75 million to America PAC, according to federal disclosures, making the group a crucial part of Mr. Trump’s bid to regain the White House.

The entrepreneur has increasingly supported Republican causes and this year became an outspoken Trump supporter.

Mr. Trump in turn has said if elected he would appoint Mr. Musk to head a government efficiency commission.

This story was reported by Reuters.

Trump calls Harris a ‘s–

0

Former President Donald Trump called rival Kamala Harris a “s— vice president” during a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Saturday evening, punctuating his broader argument that she is too liberal in a more aggressive fashion and with fresh vulgarity.

“Bernie is radical left, and this one, Kamala, is further left,” Trump told the crowd at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. “And then, so you have to tell Kamala Harris that you’ve had enough, that you just can’t take it anymore. We can’t stand you. You’re a s— vice president.”

Trump added the catchphrase from his bygone television show “The Apprentice” to cheers: “Kamala, you’re fired,” he said. “Get the hell out of here.”

Trump told the crowd that profanity helps him put emphasis on his arguments, but the more pointed attack also underscores a recent heightening of personal invective in a tight race that is in its final weeks. Trump regularly insults Harris’ intelligence, referring to her as “not a smart person” or having a “low IQ.” At a rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, he called her a “horrible person” and said he didn’t want to be nice.

Harris, campaigning in Atlanta on Saturday, ripped Trump for meandering in his public remarks. “He tends to go off script and ramble and generally for the life of him cannot finish a thought,” she said. “And he has called it the weave. But I think we here call it nonsense.”

Earlier in the day, in Detroit, Harris expounded on her case that Trump is not fit for the presidency.

“He’s becoming increasingly unstable and unhinged,” she said. “The American people are seeing it, witnessing it in real time. The American people deserve better than someone who seems to be unstable.”

Trump spent 12 minutes at the beginning of his roughly 90-minute speech telling stories about Palmer, the late professional golfer for whom the airport was named. At one point, he suggested that Palmer had unusually large genitalia.

“He was strong and tough, and I refuse to say it, but when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there they said, ‘Oh, my God. That’s unbelievable,'” Trump said.

The Harris campaign quickly pounced on the anecdote. One Harris campaign spokesperson, Sarafina Chitika, suggested that someone should do a “wellness check” on the former president, while another, Matt Corridoni, posted on X that Trump was “Having a totally normal one.” In a statement, her campaign sarcastically chided Trump for focusing on “the issue most important to voters in this election: a deceased golfer’s … anatomy.”

An NBC News poll earlier this month showed Harris and Trump tied at 48% apiece nationally, while state polls in Pennsylvania and other battlegrounds have consistently placed them within the margin of error of each other.

Harris portrayed Trump Saturday as too tired for the job they both seek, a partisan reversal of Republican claims that President Joe Biden is incapacitated. Trump, for his part, called Biden “mentally deficient” Saturday.

Biden dropped out of the race this summer and helped Harris lock down the Democratic nomination with his endorsement after he stumbled badly in a debate against Trump.

“Now he’s ducking debates and canceling interviews because of exhaustion,” Harris said. Trump canceled an interview with NBC News’ senior business correspondent Christine Romans that was scheduled to tape on Monday; his campaign said it would reschedule but had not yet done so.

He also backed down from a CNBC interview and a planned appearance at a National Rifle Association event in recent days.

On Friday, during an exchange with reporters in Michigan, Harris took a cleaner swing at Trump over his energy level.

“Being president of the United States is probably one of the hardest jobs in the world,” Harris said. “And so, we really do need to ask if he’s exhausted being on the campaign trail, is he fit to do the job?”

’60 Minutes’ Responds to Donald Trump’s Accusation Over “Deceitful Editing” of Kamala Harris Interview: “That Is False”

0

60 Minutes has responded to Donald Trump‘s accusation that the CBS newsmagazine edited its Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris to make the interview more favorable to her — and the Trump campaign issued its own statement in response.

On Sunday, the show released the following statement in response to the Republican presidential candidate:

Former President Donald Trump is accusing 60 Minutes of deceitful editing of our Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. That is false.

60 Minutes gave an excerpt of our interview to Face the Nation that used a longer section of her answer than that on 60 Minutes. Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response. When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate and on point. The portion of her answer on 60 Minutes was more succinct, which allows time for other subjects in a wide ranging 21-minute-long segment.

Remember, Mr. Trump pulled out of his interview with 60 Minutes and the vice president participated.

Our long-standing invitation to former President Trump remains open. If he would like to discuss the issues facing the nation and the Harris interview, we would be happy to have him on 60 Minutes.

In response, the Trump campaign released its own statement: “60 Minutes just admitted to doing exactly what President Trump accused them of doing,” said Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary. “They edited in a different response — from another part of her answer — to make Kamala Harris sound less incoherent than she really was. Their statement is not a denial, it is an admission that they did exactly what they were accused of. This is another reminder of how hopelessly biased 60 Minutes is, and how correct President Trump was to decline their invitation to be subjected to their fake news hackery. Release the transcript!”

Trump has called the show’s broadcast of the Harris interview a “giant fake news scam” and has suggested that CBS was trying to help her. The accusations arose after it was pointed out online that Harris gave a different answer to a question in a teaser clip that aired CBS’ on Face the Nation from what was shown on 60 Minutes. The question in question was about the Biden administration’s sway on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“It seems that Prime Minister Netanyahu is not listening,” 60 Minutes’ Bill Whitaker says to Harris in the interview.

In the teaser clip, Harris briefly pauses and then says, “The work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.”

During the 60 Minutes broadcast, Harris quickly responds, “We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”

On his Truth Social feed, Trump wrote, “Her REAL ANSWER WAS CRAZY, OR DUMB, so they actually REPLACED it with another answer in order to save her or, at least, to make her look better.”

Trump has since called for CBS to lose its FCC license over the interview. FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel dismissed that idea, adding that Trump’s “threats against free speech are serious and should not be ignored.”

Meanwhile, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley recently said that the Trump campaign offered “shifting explanations” for why the former president was backing out of the interview.
