Volcano near Iceland’s Grindavik erupts for sixth time since December

0

Met office reports eruption does not ‘present a threat to life’, and Reykjavik’s Keflavik Airport says flights unaffected.

A volcano in southwestern Iceland has erupted for the sixth time since December, according to the country’s meteorological office.

The eruption started at 9:26pm (21:26 GMT) on Thursday, with live video images showing red lava spewing out of a new fissure on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.

The total length of the fissure was about 3.9km (2.4 miles) and had extended by 1.5km (0.93 miles) in about 40 minutes, said the met office in a statement.

Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs said the eruption did not “present a threat to life” and that the nearby area had been evacuated. “The impact is limited to a localized area near the eruption site,” it posted on social media platform X.

Regional police chief Ulfar Ludviksson told Icelandic media that the evacuation of the nearby fishing village of Grindavik was going well, adding that 22 or 23 houses were currently occupied.

Most of Grindavik’s 4,000 residents had evacuated in November, prior to an eruption in December, and while residents have since been allowed to return in between eruptions, only a few have opted to stay overnight.

Iceland’s national airport and air navigation service provider Isavia said in a statement that flights to and from the country were “operating normally despite the ongoing eruption”.

The Blue Lagoon luxury geothermal spa and hotel said it had shut down and evacuated its guests.

The met office said that there was still “considerable seismic activity” at the northern end of the fissure more than an hour after the start of the eruption, reporting that a magnitude 4.0 earthquake had been recorded at 10:37pm (22:37 GMT).

Accumulated magma

The eruptions show the challenge faced by the island nation of nearly 400,000 people as scientists warn that the Reykjanes Peninsula could face repeated outbreaks for decades or even centuries.

Since 2021, there have been nine eruptions on the peninsula, six occurring since December, following the reactivation of geological systems that had been dormant for 800 years.

In response, authorities have constructed man-made barriers to redirect lava flows away from critical infrastructure, including the Svartsengi power plant, the Blue Lagoon outdoor spa and the town of Grindavik.

The most recent eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula, home to some 30,000 people or nearly 8 percent of the country’s total population, ended on June 22 after spewing fountains of molten rock for 24 days.

The latest eruption took place on the Sundhnukar crater row east of mountain Sylingafell, partly overlapping other recent outbreaks on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The volcanic system on the peninsula has no central crater but erupts by opening giant cracks in the ground.

Studies had shown magma accumulating underground, prompting warnings of new volcanic activity in the area located just south of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik.

Iceland boasts more than 30 active volcanoes, making the north European island a prime destination for volcano tourism – a niche sector that attracts thrill seekers.

House Judiciary Committee subpoenas company with ties to daughter of judge in Trump hush money trial

Aug. 28 (UPI) — The House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed the head of a political campaign marketing company that employs the daughter of New York State Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing former President Donald Trump‘s hush-money trial.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, requested Authentic Campaigns’ chief executive officer sit for a deposition and sign a sworn affidavit that the company, which has managed the campaigns for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, never communicated with Merchan.

Loren Merchan, the judge’s daughter, manages paid media campaigns for “candidates like Sens. Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Rep. Beto O’Rourke,” according to her bio.

Jordan’s subpoena, issued Wednesday, demands all documents relating to the company’s connections with the Biden-Harris campaign, correspondence with Judge Merchan and any documents referring to the indictment of Trump.

“If Authentic Campaigns indeed has no responsive records for the other requests made by the committee on Aug. 1, as you have asserted, the committee requests a sworn certification under the penalty of perjury that Authentic Campaigns made a reasonable, diligent and good faith search for responsive documents and was unable to locate any responsive documents,” Jordan wrote in the subpoena Wednesday.

CEO Mike Nellis called the subpoena an “abuse of power,” saying the company’s political work has no influence on Trump’s trial and is not involved in Harris’ presidential campaign.

“This is yet another abuse of power, aimed at promoting a baseless right-wing conspiracy theory that links our company, Authentic, to Donald Trump’s fraud trial,” Nellis wrote Wednesday in a post on X, showing an image of the subpoena.

“These allegations against our company are completely false and purely politically motivated,” Nellis added. “This is a blatant attempt to intimidate us and divert attention from Donald Trump’s conviction. We refuse to be bullied, and we will not allow House Republicans or MAGA extremists to spread lies about our work.”

Merchan’s daughter has worked on campaigns for top Democrats, including Harris and Biden. Trump, who is the Republican nominee for president, has repeatedly cited her political work in efforts to force Judge Merchan to recuse himself from the case. Merchan has rejected three recusal requests, insisting there is no conflict.

“Defendant has provided nothing new for this court to consider,” Merchan wrote in his ruling earlier this month. “Counsel has merely repeated arguments that have already been denied by this and higher courts.”

Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment his former attorney made to an adult film actress. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 18.

Trump’s Embrace of ‘Anti-Vax Kook’ RFK Jr. Is a ‘Self-Destructive’ Move, Top GOP Donor Says

0

Donald Trump’s embrace of “anti-vax kook” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and former Bernie Sanders supporter Tulsi Gabbard will be his “self-destructive” downfall, top GOP donor Eric Levine wrote in an email to his fundraising partners, made public Wednesday.

Levine warned at the end of his message that if Trump does not “fight for the middle,” he will “forever be known from this day forward as the ‘former president.’”

Levine previously supported Nikki Haley during the Republican primaries but has stated the he will vote for Trump in November.

The Trump campaign announced Wednesday that Kennedy and Gabbard had been added to the GOP candidate’s transition team following their public endorsements.

Kennedy dropped out of the presidential race as an independent on Friday and immediately endorsed Trump. In his concession speech, Kennedy spoke about his family’s connection to the Democratic Party, and his own distaste for the party now.

“It had become the party of war, censorship, corruption, big pharma, big tech and big money,” he said, “When it abandoned democracy by canceling the primary to conceal the cognitive decline of the sitting president, I left the party to run as an independent.”

Read Levine’s letter admonishing Trump for adding “fringe” political figures like Kennedy and Gabbard to his ranks in full below:

In a new email, Eric Levine, a top GOP donor who said last March he would vote for Trump “reluctantly and with reservations,” assails the former president for adding RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard to his transition team:

“It is hard to imagine a more self-destructive announcement.” pic.twitter.com/am31Fxxq7h

— Matthew Kassel (@matthewkassel) August 28, 2024

At the beginning of his message — titled with the subject line, “Is Trump Trying to Lose?” — Levine said, “Yesterday, the Trump campaign proudly announced that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard endorsed the former president and are being added to his transition team. It is hard to imagine a more self-destructive announcement.

“RFK is an anti-vax kook who sees conspiracies behind every tree and under every bed, and Gabbard is the former vice-chair of the DNC and co-chair of the 2016 Bernie Sanders for President campaign. She endorsed Sanders because of his ‘sound judgement’ on foreign policy, which she believed would ‘usher in a new era of peace and prosperity.’ Sanders is a self-avowed socialist. He is an isolationist. He hates the America we love and everything it stands for. Yet, Gabbard endorsed him, and this is who Trump is embracing. There is something terribly wrong with this picture.

“Rather than seeking and coveting the endorsement of fringe candidates with fringe policy positions that offend most Republicans and Independents, Trump would be better served by announcing he added Nikki Haley to his transition team. It is her voters he should be focused on.

“Kamala Harris is lying about her record for a reason. She is a radical progressive who may not understand that her policies are destructive and will destroy the America we know and love, but she certainly understands that they are unpopular and that her record is one of failure. It is for those reasons that she has focused her campaign on rebranding herself. Her entire campaign strategy is to appeal to Haley voters, independents and women; Reagan voters. These should be solid Trump voters. Harris’ lies are easily exposed if Trump remains focused on policy and records. Yet, they are up for grabs because Trump seems to be laser focused on narrowing his base rather than expanding it.

“Trump only helps Harris in her orchestrated act of national deception when he embraces fringe candidates like RFK and Gabbard.

“As a former Haley voter and Reagan Republican, I say to you, Mr. Trump, speak to me and my fellow Republicans. Reject the fringes. Fight for the middle. If you do not, you will forever be known from this day as the ‘former president,’” Levine concluded.

The Trump campaign responded to Levin’s missive in a statement to media later Wednesday.

“As President Trump’s broad coalition of supporters and endorsers expands across partisan lines, we are proud that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard have been added to the Trump/Vance Transition team,” senior campaign adviser Brian Hughes said. “We look forward to having their powerful voices on the team as we work to restore America’s greatness.”
