Greek tanker attacked in Red Sea appears to be leaking oil, US says

0

The Pentagon says the Sounion is a navigational hazard and warns of a potential environmental catastrophe.

The Greek-flagged Sounion crude oil tanker is still on fire after being attacked by Yemen’s Houthi group last week, and appears to be leaking oil, the Pentagon has said.

The vessel is carrying about one million barrels of crude oil, according to Pentagon spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder.

The United States is “aware of a third party that attempted to send two tugs to the vessel to help salvage, but they were warned away by the Houthis and threatened with being attacked,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

The Sounion was attacked on August 21 by multiple projectiles off Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah.

The Iran-aligned Houthis have been targeting shipping in the Red Sea area since November, in what they call an act of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip because of Israel’s continuing war on the enclave.

The leaking tanker is both a navigational hazard and a potential environmental catastrophe, Ryder said.

“These are simply reckless acts of terrorism which continue to destabilise global and regional commerce, put the lives of innocent civilian mariners at risk and imperil the vibrant maritime ecosystem in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the Houthis’ own back yard,” Ryder said.

The European Union’s Red Sea naval mission responded to a request from the shipping company and the vessel’s captain and dispatched a unit to provide protection to the crew of 23 Filipinos and two Russians.

The crew abandoned the vessel and were rescued by the EU mission. There were no reports of injuries.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the vessel was targeted because its operator, Athens-based Delta Tankers, violated its ban on “entry to the ports of occupied Palestine”.

The Sounion was the third vessel operated by Delta Tankers to be attacked in the Red Sea this month.

It was sailing from Iraq to Greece when it was attacked on August 21, according to Ryder.

The Yemeni group has sunk two ships and killed at least three crew members since it began attacking ships with ties to Israel.

Its actions have affected global shipping, prompting many ship owners to avoid the Red Sea region and send their vessels on lengthier and more costly routes around the southern tip of Africa.

Kamala Harris Is Clobbering Trump in the Money Race

The vice president raised $361 million in August, nearly three times what Trump collected

Kamala Harris raised $361 million in August, nearly three times as much cash as Donald Trump disclosed raising last month.

Since taking over the Democratic ticket, the vice president has absolutely clobbered Trump in the fundraising race — bringing in about two and a half times as much money as the former president.

Harris’ campaign and authorized committees raised $671 million in July and August, according to numbers released by her campaign on Friday. Trump’s campaign and committees brought in $139 million in July and $130 million in August, according to his team.

The latest fundraising haul underscores how Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race on July 21 and Harris’ immediate ascension to the top of the ticket have fundamentally transformed the 2024 presidential race. In the second quarter this year, before Biden exited the race, Trump reported outraising Biden.

Now, the money race isn’t even close — and Trump is having to rely more and more on support from billionaire-funded outside groups that can accept unlimited donations.

The changeover to Harris appears to have vastly improved Democrats’ chances — whereas Biden was consistently trailing in battleground state polling, Harris appears to be competitive in all of them.

The switch has also rattled Trump, who has repeatedly complained about Harris being the Democratic nominee, rather than Biden. He did so again during a Fox News town hall Wednesday night.
“He got 14 million votes, and they threw him out,” Trump said. “It was really a coup, when you think about it.”

Israel will cease to exist if Harris becomes president, Trump claims

0

Republican presidential nominee tells Jewish donors that his Democratic rival would ‘totally abandon’ Israel.

Israel will cease to exist if United States Vice President Kamala is elected to the White House in November, former President Donald Trump has claimed.

Addressing Jewish donors in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Thursday, the Republican nominee claimed that Harris would “totally abandon” Israel as president and that “terrorist armies” would wage war to “drive Jews out of the Holy Land”.

“You are going to be abandoned if she becomes president, and I think you have to explain that to your people. Because they don’t know it. They have no idea what they are getting into,” Trump said in a remote address to the Republican Jewish Coalition.

“You are not going to have an Israel … if she becomes president. Israel will no longer exist.”

Trump said he would ban refugees from “terror-infested areas” including Gaza, arrest “pro-Hamas thugs” who vandalise government property, and cancel funding and accreditation for universities that spread “anti-Semitic propaganda” if elected to a second term.

US university campuses earlier this year were rocked by protests over Israel’s war in Gaza, triggering claims of anti-Semitism along with counterclaims that accusations of bigotry were being used to silence legitimate criticism of Israeli policy.

Trump, who claimed Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel would not have happened if he was president, also took aim at Jewish people who vote for Democratic candidates, claiming he had done more for Israel than any other US president.

“Who are the 50 percent of Jewish people that are voting for these people that hate Israel and don’t like the Jewish people?” he said. “Why are they, why are they voting? How do they exist?”

In response to Trump’s remarks, Harris campaign spokesperson Morgan Finkelstein said the vice president “stands steadfastly against anti-Semitism” and has been a “lifelong supporter of the State of Israel as a secure, democratic homeland for the Jewish people”.

Finkelstein also said Trump had a history of demeaning Jewish people and associating with far-right figures, including holding a private dinner with white supremacist and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes.

“He has said the only people he wants counting his money are ‘short guys wearing yarmulkes’, and praised neo-Nazis who chanted ‘Jews will not replace us’ as ‘very fine people’,” Finkelstein said.

Harris has largely echoed President Joe Biden’s staunch support of Israel, resisting pressure from the progressive wing of her party to halt shipments of weapons being used by Israeli forces in Gaza.

The Democratic nominee has, however, placed greater emphasis on the plight of Palestinians in public statements, saying she will not be “silent” about the suffering in Gaza and that “far too many” innocent civilians have been killed in the war.

‘South Park’ Won’t Return Until 2025 to Avoid Covering the Election, Creators Say

0

“South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker just revealed that their popular adult animated series won’t be returning until 2025 in an effort to avoid covering the election. In fact, they said they have less fun crafting seasons around political events and simply don’t want to satirize Donald Trump anymore.

“We’ve tried to do ‘South Park’ through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a hard thing — it’s such a mind scramble, and it seems like it takes outsized importance,” Stone said in a Thursday interview with Vanity Fair.

Parker recognized that the November election is “obviously f–king important,” but added that it’s a killjoy for them creatively.

“It kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun,” he said, adding that he doesn’t know where else their Trump jokes could go. “I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.”

In addition, Stone and Parker said the delay is also a decision they’ve left up to studio boss Paramount, as they are “waiting for Paramount to figure all their s–t out.”

“South Park” Season 26 wrapped in March 2023, while its most recent special “South Park: The End of Obesity” aired in May. The Season 27 hiatus marks the first year off since the show debuted in 1997.

The complete series can currently be streamed on Comedy Central and Paramount+.
