Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro leads ‘free speech’ rally in Sao Paulo

0

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has rallied thousands of protesters in central Sao Paulo to protest against the country’s ban of the social media platform X.

The demonstration was timed to the country’s Independence Day on Saturday.

It also unfolded while Bolsonaro’s political rival, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, led an official parade with the country’s military in the capital Brasilia.

Dressed in the colours of the Brazilian flag, Bolsonaro climbed atop a temporary stage erected on Sao Paulo’s main thoroughfare, Paulista Avenue, and addressed the crowd.

His remarks took aim at one of the main figures responsible for the ban on X: Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

“I hope that the Federal Senate puts the brakes on Alexandre de Moraes, this dictator who does more harm to Brazil than Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva himself,” Bolsonaro told the crowd.

De Moraes had called upon the social media platform to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, as is required under Brazilian law.

In August, when X refused to comply, De Moraes released an order for the suspension of all the platform’s activities in Brazil.

It was the culmination of an ongoing spat between De Moraes and X’s owner, Elon Musk.

The billionaire entrepreneur had closed X’s offices in Brazil earlier that month, to avoid having to comply with separate court orders to suspend accounts peddling misinformation.

On September 2, Brazil’s Supreme Court unanimously upheld the decision to ban X, with all five judges offering their support.

Explaining the decision, Justice Flavio Dino said, “A party that intentionally fails to comply with court decisions appears to consider itself above the rule of law.”

But that failed to quell the uproar, particularly among members of the far right in Brazil, who considered the shuttering of X as an infringement of their free-speech rights.

Bolsonaro, a figurehead of Brazil’s far right, seized the moment to call for protest.

“When freedom of expression and the press are threatened, democracy cries out for help,” he wrote on social media on September 4.

“Therefore, I call on all Brazilians who love freedom and our democracy: Come to Paulista Avenue next Saturday, September 7!”

Bolsonaro himself has had clashes with De Moraes, who formerly led the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which oversees Brazil’s elections.

In the lead-up to the 2022 presidential elections, Bolsonaro, the incumbent, spread misinformation about electoral fraud. After he lost the vote, Bolsonaro and his allies proceeded to challenge the results, using unfounded claims to sow suspicion.

The result was weeks of protests and a violent assault on Brasilia’s government buildings on January 8, 2023, as Bolsonaro’s supporters looted the premises.

De Moraes led the Superior Electoral Court in voting to ban Bolsonaro from office until 2030 for his role in spreading false information.

At the Independence Day protest in Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro re-upped his false claims about the 2022 election.

“The 2022 elections were completely biased by the president of the Superior Electoral Court, Alexandre de Moraes,” he told the crowd, adding that the January 8 riot was a “set-up”.

Details On The Second Apparent Assassination Attempt On Donald Trump

According to the BBC, a Secret Service agent spotted a riffle barrel near a short distance from where the former president was playing golf.

Per NBC News, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw informed reporters that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office received a call about gunshots near Trump’s golf course around 1:30 p.m.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that U.S. Secret Service agents fired their weapons after a member of Trump’s Secret Service team spotted the armed suspect.

An eyewitness saw the suspect fleeing the scene in a black Nissan. Authorities found an AR-style rifle with a scope and a GoPro camera in the bushes.

Martin County Sheriff’s Office road control unit later identified and matched the individual’s vehicle and license plates.

“The suspect’s demeanor, I would describe as having a relatively calm, flat affect; he was not displaying a lot of emotions, never asked, ‘What is this about?’” Snyder stated.

Shortly after the incident, Trump’s campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, confirmed he was “safe and unharmed.”

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity,” Steven Cheung said in a brief initial statement.

Donald Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, also addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he spoke to the former president before the news became public.

I’m glad President Trump is safe. I spoke to him before the news was public and he was, amazingly, in good spirits.

Still much we don’t know, but I’ll be hugging my kids extra tight tonight and saying a prayer of gratitude.

Then, on the evening of September 15, Trump released his own statement about the incident.

Later that evening, authorities officially identified Routh as the suspected shooter, per NBC News. The outlet reports that Routh is 58 years old and lives in Hawaii. However, he previously resided in North Carolina.

Since the incident, authorities have reportedly released images of the AR-style weapon and GoPro camera Routh allegedly had on him while he was “lying in wait” for Trump. Additionally, authorities believe Routh was previously “convicted of possessing a weapon of mass destruction.”

Here’s What Happened During First Assassination Attempt Against Donald Trump

The second assassination attempt on Trump occurred nearly two months after the first. On July 13, authorities identified a suspect who tried to take Trump’s life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

As The Shade Room previously reported, Thomas Matthew Crooks targeted Trump and was identified as the culprit. NBC News confirmed that Crooks was a registered Republican in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service later confirmed that Thomas Crooks was also killed.

During Trump’s rally, gunshots erupted. A video TSR obtained shows Trump putting his hand to his ear and ducking behind a podium as blood appeared from his ear. ABC17News later reported that a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear.

Although Trump survived without serious injuries, a rally attendee, firefighter Corey Comperatore, lost his life.

Suspected Trump Gunman Was Once Charged With Possession of a Weapon of Mass Destruction

0

Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspected gunman involved in an apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida on Sunday, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction over 20 years ago.

“I figured he was either dead or in prison by now,” Tracy Fulk, the charging officer in the case, tells WIRED. “I had no clue that he had moved on and was continuing his escapades.”

According to court records from the Guilford District Court in North Carolina obtained by WIRED, Routh was arrested by the Greensboro Police Department on December 16, 2002.

Local reporting from Greensboro News and Record in 2002 states that Routh was pulled over by police during a traffic stop. Routh then drove to the business United Roofing, where he proceeded to barricade himself for three hours, the police said at the time.

Fulk says he was well known in the area, and that police would get alerts about him allegedly related to, as she remembers, weapons and explosives.

“One night I recognized him in his vehicle,” she says. “I knew he didn’t have a driver’s license, so I stopped him right in front of his roofing shop, which was what used to be on Lee Street in Greensboro. He stopped, and as I approached his truck he pulled a sack away from the center of the seat, and I saw a gun. So of course I drew my gun and started saying, ‘Hey! Show me your hands, show me your hands.’ And he just basically pulled into his driveway and ran into his house. So we ended up having a [Special Response Team] callout and a big standoff for a couple of hours before they went in and we arrested him.”

Routh was charged with possession of a fully automatic machine gun, referred to in court filings as a weapon of mass destruction. He was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon, as well as driving without a valid license and resisting, delaying, and obstructing law enforcement, according to Greensboro News and Record.

While the disposition of the case isn’t entirely clear, Routh did plead guilty to carrying a concealed gun.

Trump was not harmed on Sunday while playing golf. Law enforcement apprehended Routh after a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle sticking out of a perimeter fence on the course and engaged with the threat, firing at least four rounds in that direction. It’s unclear whether the gunman fired a shot. Law enforcement later found an AK-47 style rifle with a scope and a GoPro in the bushes.

The gunman was reportedly seen fleeing the scene and getting into a black Nissan; a witness took photos of the car and license plate, said Palm Beach County sheriff Ric Bradshaw at a Sunday press conference. “We had that information,” said Bradshaw. “Our real-time crime center put it out to the license plate readers, and we were able to get a hit on that vehicle on I-95.” Routh was arrested soon after.

The FBI has said they are investigating “what appears to be an attempted assassination” of Trump. This is the second assassination attempt on the former president; the first occurred on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“My resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life,” Trump wrote in a fundraising email after the apparent assassination attempt. “I will never slow down. I will never give up. I WILL NEVER SURRENDER!”

Fulk says Routh was well known for getting into armed confrontations with police. “I wasn’t the only one who had a standoff with him,” she says. “We always knew he had weapons.” Guilford County court records show Routh was charged dozens of times, often for driving-related offenses, going back to the early 1980s. Asked why he wasn’t in jail, Fulk says, “All we can do is arrest them and then obviously it goes into the court system and they decide all of that. It’s frustrating at times.”

The Greensboro Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did a lawyer who represented Routh in his 2003 divorce.

In 2023, Routh told The New York Times that he traveled to Ukraine after the Russian invasion to aid Ukraine and support the war effort. He said he planned to recruit Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban to fight for Ukraine. There is no evidence that Routh traveled to Ukraine or was successful at recruitment. Social media accounts that appear to be controlled by Routh have been taken down, but were reportedly full of erratic posts espousing Covid conspiracies, threats against Russia, and in support of politicians of a variety of ideologies.

Trump ‘safe’ after FBI investigating apparent ‘attempted assassination’ at his golf course in Florida

Sept. 15 (UPI) — Former President Donald Trump said he is “safe” after the FBI is “investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination” while the presidential candidate was on his golf course in West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, is in custody and was identified as the suspect, three senior law enforcement officials told NBC News. He lives in Kaawa, Hawaii, but previously resided in Greensboro, N.C.

The shooting comes two months after a bullet grazed Trump’s ear in an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pa.

In a new fundraising email, Trump said his “resolve is stronger than ever after another attempt on my life.”

“I will never slow down. I will never give up,” he wrote. “I WILL NEVER SURRENDER! I thank God every day for having supporters like you on my side. On November 5th, WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

A Secret Service agent spotted a man and opened fire after it was believed he may have been taking aim 300 to 500 yards — two holes — ahead of Trump, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said during a news conference. An AK-47 gun, scope, two backpacks with ceramics and a GoPro camera were recovered near Trump International Golf Course.

Bradshaw said that his office was alerted at 1:30 p.m. EDT of shots fired by Secret Service agents at the private golf course.

An agent saw a barrel with a scope sticking out of a fence and “engaged” with the suspect before he fired, Bradshaw said.

“We are able to catch a witness that came to us and said, ‘Hey, I saw the guy running out of the bushes, he jumped into a black Nissan and I took a picture of the vehicle and the tag,’ which was great,” Bradshaw said.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, which is north of Palm Beach County, said it stopped a vehicle and had “taken a suspect into custody believed to be connected to a shooting incident at Trump International in Palm Beach County,” about 44 miles away.

“There was a very serious incident down there,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said during a news conference at the scene.

The investigation has been turned over to other local and federal agencies.

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said at the news conference in West Palm Beach state charges are being prepared. The man also likely will face federal charges.

The suspect was apprehended near Stuart and Palm City, and was calm, Snyder said.

“There was a very urgent BOLO (be on lookout)” from FBI, Secret Service and PBSO, and “we immediately flooded I-95,” Snyder said.

A member of the road control unit spotted the vehicle.

“We pinched in on the car, got it safely stopped and got the driver in custody,” Snyder said about the suspect who was alone and not armed.

Northbound State Road 714 was closed for a few hours where the suspect was apprehended. There also was a serious crash during the chase.

Trump’s motorcade moved 4.5 miles east to his Mar-a-Lago resort in the town of Palm Beach, after the incident, a source told NBC News.

Secret Service quickly posted some information after the incident.

“The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement on X.

After the incident, Secret Service moved him to safety, but there was no evidence that Trump was targeted.

He was between the fifth and sixth hole when the incident occurred.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said on X he had spoken with Trump after the incident. “He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country,” Graham said.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the “security incident,” the White House said in a statement Sunday.

“They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” the White House added.

Also briefed was Attorney General Merrick Garland, who oversees the FBI. Homeland Security controls Secret Service.

“What we need right now is for the public to avoid the area around the golf course,” Jeffrey Veltri of the FBI Miami field office said at the news conference. “We will continue to support this investigation with the full resources of the FBI.”

Trump returned to Florida after appearances near Los Angeles and the Bay Area; Tucson, Ariz.; Las Vegas and Salt Lake City with the latter Saturday.

A busy road in front of Mar-a-Lago Club is open when the former president is not at the residence. After the first shooting, the road was closed even when Trump wasn’t there.

Trump International Golf Club was the first course acquired by The Trump Organization in 1999. The 330-acre course includes 5.2 acres of bunkers, 40 acres of lake, five scenic waterfall features and 900 Royal Palm trees, according to its website.

“The golf course is surrounded by shrubbery, so when somebody gets into the shrubbery, they’re pretty much out of sight, all right, and at this level that he is at right now, he’s not the sitting president,” Bradshaw said.

“If he was (sitting president), we would have had this entire golf course surrounded. But because he’s not, security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible. So, I would imagine that the next time he comes to the golf course, there’ll probably be a little bit more people around the perimeter. But the Secret Service did exactly what they should have done.”
