At least 78 people killed after boat capsizes in DRC

0

At least 58 rescued, as official warns death toll could rise after boat carrying 278 people sinks.

At least 78 people have died after a boat capsized in Lake Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a provincial governor said.

Governor of South Kivu province Jean Jacques Purisi told the Reuters news agency on Thursday that 278 people had been on board the boat before it overturned.

“It’ll take at least three days to get the exact numbers, because not all the bodies have been found yet,” Purisi told Reuters.

The governor of the neighbouring North Kivu province said at least 58 people had been rescued.

The boat, which had come from the town of Minova in South Kivu province, sank on Thursday morning, only 100 metres (328 feet) from its destination at the shore of Goma.

An increasing number of people have opted to cross the northern tip of Lake Kivu by boat to reach Goma in often overcrowded vessels to avoid land travel in an area prone to fighting between Congolese government forces and M23 rebels.

Reporting from Goma, Al Jazeera’s Alain Uaykani said there was frustration among residents over the road closures.

“Many people here are already complaining about the fact that this is the only possibility to travel between the province of North Kivu to the neighbouring province of South Kivu, even different villages along the lake here because many roads are closed due to the fighting,” he said.

Uaykani said those rescued were receiving treatment.

‘I saw people sinking’

One survivor told Reuters that as he struggled to stay afloat in the lake, others around him were drowning.

“I saw people sinking, many went under. I saw women and children sinking in the water, and I myself was on the verge of drowning, but God helped me,” said 51-year-old Alfani Buroko Byamungu from his hospital bed.

Mushagulua Bienfait, a Goma resident who lost three family members in the incident, blamed the war for his loss.

“All of this is part of the consequences of the war … They no longer make an effort to clear the enemies off the road so that it can become operational again,” he shouted.

Since M23 launched an offensive in late 2021, the group has seized large parts of territory in the eastern DRC, increasing its military presence and the number of armed groups in the area.

Billionaire Mark Cuban bashes Trump’s proposed tariffs as a ‘tax on everybody’ at Harris rally

0

Mark Cuban took the mic at Kamala Harris’s rally in Wisconsin on Thursday to bash fellow billionaire Donald Trump’s economic policies, and he didn’t hold back.

The Shark Tank star mocked the former president’s proposal to raise tariffs, which Trump has said could reach 10% or 20% for all products coming into the U.S., and added that it would amount to “a tax on everybody.”

Cuban said he believes Trump, at least in the 1990s and early 2000s, “used to know how tariffs work,” but those days are long gone.

“I don’t know what happened to him,” Cuban said.

Cuban also criticized Trump’s proposal to enact a 60% tariff on imports from China, which the former principal owner of the Dallas Mavericks said was not a good idea.

“This man has so little understanding of tariffs he thinks that China pays for them,” Cuban said. “This is the same guy who also thought that Mexico would pay for the wall.”

Cuban explained that Americans don’t realize how many of their everyday products are made in China, and with a proposed tariff on Chinese imports, the price of those products could skyrocket by 50% or more by Christmastime next year. He added that local business owners could also feel the pain of tariffs, and even be forced to close up shop.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to Fortune‘s request for comment.

Economists have said Trump’s tariff proposals would raise costs for middle-class families. The tariffs, if implemented, could cost the average American household more than $2,600 a year, according to an August study by the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Trump has previously mischaracterized how tariffs work, calling them “a tax on other countries.” In reality, tariffs are paid by American consumers buying imported products. The cost of a 10% tariff (as Trump has proposed) could reach $300 billion per year for American consumers, wrote Erica York, a senior economist at the right-leaning Tax Foundation.

Trump has said he sees tariffs as a way to raise money so the government can lower taxes, and his former top trade official, Robert Lighthizer, has said tariffs should be aimed at eliminating the U.S. trade deficit. Yet Trump’s economic plans have the potential to reshape global trade, and hiking tariffs on other countries could lead them to enact or increase tariffs on U.S.-made goods.

For Cuban, this move away from free-trade policies is a step in the wrong direction.

“The way [Trump has] been thinking about tariffs and trade now, something’s a little bit lost,” he said. “And now his trade policies, particularly with tariffs, are basically just gibberish.”

Donald Trump Overtakes Kamala Harris in 4-Point Swing: Fox News Poll

0

A recent Fox News poll shows Donald Trump pulling ahead of Kamala Harris in a 4-point swing, shaking up the dynamics of the presidential race.

The poll, conducted between October 11 and 14 among 1,110 registered voters and 870 likely voters, shows that Trump is leading Harris by 2 points among registered and likely voters, on 50 percent to her 48 percent, a 4-point swing from when Harris was leading Trump by 2 points a month ago.

Although Trump has seen a jump in the polls, his lead is still within the margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Meanwhile, Harris is ahead by 6 points among voters from the seven key battleground states, according to Fox News.

The figures are some of the best numbers for Trump in a Fox News poll since he became the Republican nominee. Fox News’ August survey showed the former president up by just 1 point.

The shift in favor of Trump has largely been driven by a rise in support among white voters, who now back him by 10 points, up from 4 points last month and 6 points in August. He is also seeing record support among voters aged 65 and older (49 percent) and those with a college degree (48 percent). Meanwhile, Harris is experiencing her lowest levels of support since becoming the nominee among Black voters (67 percent), college graduates (49 percent), voters aged 65 and older (47 percent), and white voters with a college degree (46 percent).

“Overall, the movement toward Trump is subtle but potentially consequential, especially if he is making gains among college-educated voters,” said Democratic pollster Chris Anderson, who conducts Fox News surveys with Republican Daron Shaw. “However, the race has been well within the margin of error for three months and the outcome will likely hinge on which side is more effective at getting their voters to the polls as opposed to persuasion.”

The poll shows that two-thirds of Harris and Trump supporters say they are “extremely” motivated to vote. But a larger portion of Trump’s supporters say they are voting for him rather than against Harris, compared to the vice president’s supporters. Among Harris supporters, two-thirds describe their vote as for her, but one-third say it is against Trump. Among Trump supporters, 80 percent say they are voting for him rather than against Harris (18 percent).

Newsweek contacted the Harris and Trump campaigns for comment via email.

Trump has generally been seeing a shift in the polls in his favor. RealClearPolitics’ poll tracker last week showed that Michigan had flipped in favor of Trump for the first time since July 29. Nevada and Pennsylvania have also gone Republican. Meanwhile, pollster Nate Silver‘s forecast showed last week that 19 states had shifted in the former president’s favor.

The polls are still very close, especially in swing states, where the candidates are within 1 or 2 points of each other. On Wednesday, Silver’s forecast showed for the first time that Donald Trump and Harris now essentially have an equal chance of winning in November, with Harris standing at 50.1 percent, compared to Trump’s 49.7 percent.

It comes as Harris’ odds of victory in the election dropped by about 6 percentage points since late September, with Trump gaining in 19 states, according to Silver’s forecast.

“The forecast is really close. After another day of polls showing an essentially tied race in the Midwestern battlegrounds, it’s now literally 50/50,” Silver wrote on his website.

Kamala Harris Waves Off Trump Hecklers at the ‘Wrong Rally’: ‘I Think You Meant to Go to the Smaller One Down the Street’ | Video

0

Kamala Harris was ready with a snappy response for pro-MAGA hecklers who attended her rally in Wisconsin on Thursday, her sixth visit to the state this election cycle.

After their cries rang out, Harris looked in their direction, waved them off, and said, “Oh, you guys are at the wrong rally.” As her crowd of supporters cheered, she added, “I think you meant to go to the smaller one down the street.” Watch the interaction, below.

Harris began the day in Milwaukee, where she privately met with students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The vice president also spoke to reporters about the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. “Hamas is decimated and its leadership is eliminated. This moment gives us an opportunity to finally end the war in Gaza,” Harris said. “And it must end such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.”

Harris then departed Milwaukee for La Crosse, where she spoke to supporters at the UW-La Crosse Recreational Eagle Center, followed by Green Bay.

Once there, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, Harris was met by two protestors who held signs that read, “No arms embargo, no vote” and “No vote 4 genocide.”

A smattering of pro-Trump supporters also congregated outside Resch Expo and waved “47” flags and banners emblazoned with photos of Trump. The outlet also noted that Harris/Walz supporters were seen wearing “Educators for Kamala and Tim” shirts at the rally.
